115 central banks are working on the introduction of a “Central Bank Digital Currency”. With trust in state institutions having plummeted in recent years and democracy on the defensive (V-Dem reports, Civicus Monitor), many view these plans, including the introduction of a digital euro, with scepticism. However, well invested and implemented, it can contribute to a decisive democratisation of the monetary and financial system.
